Default Considering a move to SF

There was lots of advice in the "Considering a move to NYC" post, I thought I'd ask the same for San Francisco.

Actually, I already live in the Bay Area, and it is boring me to death. I've lived in the East Bay since I moved here from London in 1998. I loved living in London (Camden Town, and Brixton), I hate living in the suburbs but inertia set has in.

I bought a house ~6 years ago, but once or twice a year I think semi-seriously about getting out of my rut and making the move. It is a big decision though, and I don't know SF well enough to know suitable neighborhoods to buy.

Some notes:

- I am young-ish (36) free and single
- I currently have 4 beds in ~1600 sq ft and a large garden, and have little need for more than 2 beds and a balcony
- I have no view, a big reason of my wanting to move would be for cityscape or bay views (I must admit, the view from El Diablo's pad he posted re-kindled this years thoughts)
- Moving from a house to an apartment / condo might be difficult to get used to
- I seek modern / loft / contemporary over historic / traditional

TIA to anyone commenting on my daydreams.

* It did just cross my mind that I could rent out my house and buy or rent in the city.

Ok, "I'm not that old" is better?

I live in Pleasant Hill, next to Walnut Creek. There is nothing going on out here. Nothing.

drive in every day and get a feel for the different areas. have a real estate rental person show you some in your price range. go from there.
i like pacifica as its a town and contained without the traffic and only a few minutes to the city and poker rooms. and on the ocean

pacifica is definitely a nice option. have some friends who live out there and do a fair amount of my surfing out there. if the view is what you're going for, its beautiful when its not foggy. but thats standard sf for ya. if its the city feel that you miss, you definitely wont get that in pacifica... but its much closer to the city feel than pleasant hill is. at least pleasant hill is a rich area so your house should go for a decent amount one way or another.

i didnt really contribute much. crap.

Yeah man, at least get to the other side of the tunnel. I like nightlife so I'd say just live in the city.

I have ridden through Pacifica on a motorcycle trip, and it is very picturesque - but far away from SF. Pleasant Hill is the poor man's Walnut Creek, and while my home has appreciated ridiculously, so has everywhere else.

I was thinking much more central. Isn't there a lot of redevelopment going on around the Tenderloin? Or is it still likely to remain pretty seedy?

I sometimes feel that the Bay Area is such a sprawling mass of nothingness, I should maybe uproot and try somewhere completely different....LA, San Diego, perhaps Denver. And then there's that NYC thread...

Given your parameters you're likely to end up south of Market, around Diablo, ideally near the stadium and the water. It's a walkable neighborhood now with lots of places to eat. It also has a lot of sunlight.

If you liked London though, Brooklyn is probably more your speed.
