Re: Casino Chips
Fired clay chips cost a casino around 35-37 cents each. They often make $5 and higher "commemorative chips" hoping people keep them.

Re: Casino Chips
I've also noticed that a lot of the $5 commems seem to be cheaper quality. They are noticably lighter than the standard chips. So it would not surprise me at all if the casinos were opting for 20cent chips for the $5 commems they are hoping will walk out within a year vs the normal $5's they intend to be in play for 10 years.
Harrah's next to the cashier actually has a chip display referring to these as "collectibles". They are begging people to take them. |

Re: Casino Chips
pointless as it may be, I am back to defend myself. I was talking about cashing in a small amount of overchips (25-500) at other casinos. If not able to do it directly, any strip casino will exchange their's for someone else's in the pit, hell I cashed 100s from the mirage at the freaking casino royale the other day. It might take a stop before hitting the cage, but you will be hard-pressed to be refused action because of the casino of origin on your chips
The only exception being denominations tracked for structuring/security reasons. |

Re: Casino Chips
My last time in Vegas, I played in 5 casinos. But I went home with 21 different $1 chips because I walked the strip and went into casinos and bought a single $1 chip. I even asked the cashier to pick out a clean one for me.
At the casinos I played in, I bought a rack of chips from the cashier and pocketed the cleanest $1 chip. These casinos pay less than $1 for most of their chips so they really don't care if you pocket them. This used to be a problem but now it is rare to see a chip less than $1 in a casino for this very reason. Pocketing your chips is technically a no-no at the table but as others have pointed out, a small amount is usually never a problem. There could be rules for large denomination chips though like $1000 or bigger. Although I'm sure you're not going to pay that much for a single chip as a souvenir. |

Re: Casino Chips
I asked if it would be breaking any rules to take some chips home from the Planet Hollywood on my recent trip. The floor almost laughed and said, "Take all you want, they cost the casino 47 cents. We're happy to give them to you"
