I should also have mentioned that you are able to enter '0' as an amount spent now (and I am still aware of the other issues raised concerning the question wording).

Thanks

this is the area that causes most damage, and which needs most work.

There has been a great deal of study in this area. Perhaps you might consider studying the positive effects of gamboling. The purpose of research is after all to discover something new, no?

Let me just add that I agree with almost everything quoted in the post above, but disagree that 2+2 is not a good place to study problem gamblers.

First, as stated earlier, just because you are good does not mean you don't have a problem.

[/ QUOTE ]
Yeah. More likely to become addicted when there are positives (an income) than when it's mainly costs. It's just that becoming addicted is generally less harmful.

There are dangers, though. Non gamblers looking for gambling costs always focus on money so winners naturally dismiss their concerns but both overlook other costs, eg time or life balance. If someone was asking my advice about a 17/18 year old getting into poker I'd be more concerned by the impacts of winning than losing. (Quickly add that I wouldn't discourage it; poker is a wonderful, challenging, fun, educating, maturing activity). Losing is most likely to cause him to quit while winning may cause him to quit school and maybe much more.

Generally, though, the skills required to win at poker create a person better able to assess and deal with these problems.

Thanks, this is an interesting point, but although there is existing research into problem gambling, I can't agree with the sentiment that there is nothing new to find out. Internet gambling, in particular, is a relatively new field of research, and there is still a clear need for better understanding of the characteristics of people who gamble online (with and without problems).

This survey has flaws it assumes everyone is losing. I don't spend anything on poker but I do draw from it every month.. same goes for slots and table games, I'm in the minority but I do draw from both every month (Bonus whoring)

Guys, I have a survey too:

1) On a scale from 1-10, how bad is your gambling addiction?

2) Please (50 words or less) describe how gambling has ruined your life.

3) Have you ever gambled and lost money and been sad?

Thanks in advance for your thoughtful replies; although this isn't a scientific survey at all, I will still be drawing all sorts of conclusions from the results. Maybe if I do enough poorly-conceived research I'll be able to get the recognition I've missed out on because I couldn't complete a degree in a real science

Lots of interesting reactions and opinions, thanks for this. The constructive criticisms are all being noted and will be taken into consideration and will help with revisions to the questionnaire.

In addition, please do feel free to make specific suggestions about how you think the the survey could be changed in order to improve it.

Regards,

Joanne

The survey is funded by the RIGT (Responsibility in Gambling Trust) and the ESRC (Economic and Social Research Council).

[/ QUOTE ]

These both institutions seem legit, but I think calling a gambling trust "RIGT" is a rather unfortunate choice of acronyms.

[/ QUOTE ]

Definitely.

Responsibility in Gaming & Gambling Examination Department would have been much better.
