Default Jason Varitek

I think it's more than obvious what Tek means to the Red Sox pitching staff. They have completely fallen apart. There was a interesting story of when Schilling was in his first spring training with the Sox. Griffey Jr was up and Schill shook off Tek for three striaght calls with a 0-2 count. Tek let him throw what he wanted and Griffey took it deep. After that game, Schilling had a long talk with Tek and the rest is history. When Papelbon came up from the minors last year, Schilling took him aside and told him to just listen to Tek, he'll get you through everything.

Now Tek is out and the Sox suck. Quite a few of my Red Sox contingent agree with me. However, I was surprised that Sublime dismissed this quickly. Sublime, you underestimate what a catcher is worth to a pitching staff. He's also the captain for a reason eventhough he's had an aweful year at the plate.

I think it's faulty to base anything like that on such a small sample size.

If catchers had significant impacts on pitching staffs there would be some kind of statistical evidence somewhere.

We've actually had a thread about catchers impacts before.

Like what kind? I don't think anyone is taking down how often a player shakes off the catcher and the results of the following pitch.

They have kept track of Pitcher's ERA with different catchers.

there is a entire chapter in BBTN on the subject. the conclusion is of course that catchers have no proveable impact on starting pitching.

yeah thats the reason. couldnt be that jason johnson has had 3 starts this month, or that the sox have had 7 consecutive games against teams cleary superior (detroit/NYY) teams. or missing your second best starter all month. or that your missing one of your best OF's. playing really good teams and having no bullpen and three reasonable starters is usually a recipe for success.

i am surprised you were surprised.

no, i feel confident the reverse is true. what about javy lopez? he was the backstop for some of the best pitching staffs for the past 100 years...did he somehow lose his cathing mojo?

a few reasons im sure:

1) hes gritty
2) he was actually very good before this year
3) has the longest tenure of any position player

are you trying to say that him being on the field alone is ebough to rally the sox to score more runs and allow less?

this is baseball, not football. emotion takes a back seat to pure skill. a very distant back seat.

btw, i wish varitek was healthy as i believe he is better than what he has put up. however, i dont think him being out is the reason for the struggles. every inning wakefield doesnt pitch is one more for a subpar pitcher.playing the two best teams in baseball for seven straight games (and days) will kill a weak/depleted pitching staff.

I heard this clip from Paplebom about a week ago. Interviewer: Jonathon, have you ever shaken off Varitek?
Paplebom: Of course I have. Once. And so and so took me deep.
