Re: Best Guitar Players of All Time
guitarists that have blown me away live recently are Buddy Guy, Tab Benoit, Jimmy Thackery, Alvin Youngblood Hart, Chuck Prophet(from Green on Red ..once a rumur says was offered a gig w/ the Rolling Stones at one time-which he turned down),Dave Alvin, David Hidalgo(from Los Lobos).
In my younger years I heavily dug southern/british and then hard rock and punk..probably faves there early Eric Clapton(Cream/Blues Breakers), Jeff Beck, Jimmy Page,Jerry Garcia(also an excellent pedal steel guitarist), Hendrix, Neil Young, Johnny Marr(The Smiths), SVR and his brother Jimmy Ray(Fabulous Thuderbirds), Johnny Winter(2nd Winter so sick-pissed I missed him on his tour about 6 months ago),Jorma Kaukinon from Hot Tuna, Duane Allman and Dicky Betts,Carlos Santana and Frank Zappa. Must great punk acts were all about volume and rythmn Bob Mould from Husker Du sticks out cause he was so twisted and loud. Billy Zoom from X for the attitude. Never really been into virtuosity but more high energy and tone read feedback ie [censored] like the dude from Screaming Trees. fyi for all you guys that dont know Buddy Guy(heavy hard blues rock sound) and his ilk were the progenitor of almost all the young great British blues rock guitarists in the mid-late 1960's and even Hendrix. All this energy came from the blues..from roots American music. I cant pick just one. |

Re: Best Guitar Players of All Time
Im a huge blues fan so all of my picks will be pretty biased. I leave out guitarists like Van Halen and Vernon Reid, Steve Vai, etc, because while all technically fantastic I dont feel like they offer much artistically.
1. Luther Dickinson (North Mississippi Allstars) 2. SRV 3.Duane Allman 4. Buddy Guy 5.John Frusciante 4 |

One guy that doesn't get as much credit as he should is Gary Moore. He went from a metal god:
With solos like this: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=40OR-JtfP_Y and this: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=W-gc2B2IKik Back to being more of a blues guy with stuff like this: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lqAuuIDU2sw and this: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XXYjEMTQRm0 and my personal favorite, his cover of Albert King's 'Oh Pretty Woman': http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=J6oDdgrbmeE |
