Default Newt For Prez?

Newt gave a good presentation at the National Press Club today that was carried by C-span. Interesting and relavent talk and insightful. I do not know if the talk will be rebroadcast but I hope so - it would be worth seeing.

Whatever anybody thinks about him he's got too much baggage to ever get elected.

Newt's always been one of the sharpest, most forward thinking men in politics, but has zero chance of being elected President, IMO. If he does run, I hope he has cured his bad habit of being hyper partisan, to the point of stupidity. I am thinking of the famous Susan Smith comment. Something to the effect that "this is what happens when the Democrats are in charge."

He reminds me of a guy who has the little angel and little devil over each shoulder. He doesn't always listen to the right one. I do hope he enters the race. If nothing else, it will greatly increase the intelligence of the Republican debate.

My God, I'd have to tune into Hannity's show just to see how he handles fawning all over both Rudy and Newt simultaneously. I mean seriously, what would he do? Would he just convulse mumbling "Rudy" and "Newt" until this happened?

I actually have some respect for Newt because he is one of the few republicans who is not a complete partisan hack. He's always been one of the first Republicans to criticize Bush and he's one of the more intellectually honest debaters when he appears on talk shows. He's pretty good and getting into specifics and doesn't try to hide his positions behind obfuscatory rhetoric. I also think he's matured a lot since the Clinton years.

I wouldn't want him to be president, but I would actually like to see him run because he would significantly raise the level of discourse in the Republican primaries.

As far as his baggage goes, I don't think he has that much more baggage than Rudy. They're both adulterers and have made questionable ethical decisions in the past.

I think Newt is terrible. He barely mentions reducing the size of government or cutting taxes, instead he talks about "doing this better" and how terrible liberals are. Instead of attempting to defeat socialists, he attempts to subborn their causes in the name of conservatism... and in doing so, he sacrifices his credibility has a conservative. As house leader he has overseen the greatest expansion of government in America of all time... that should never be overlooked.

It's on the front page of C-SPAN at the moment. "Newt Gingrich, American Solutions for Winning the Future, General Chairman (8/7/2007)"
