I'm pretty sure the Republican coalition that elected Bush and controlled Congress since 1994 is done for. The neocons are hated, the religious people are blindly focused on Roe and gay marriage, immigration hawks are busy alienating Latino voters, and business Republicans hate the first three groups. Given demographic changes, I think it's not unlikely that the current incarnation of the Republican party NEVER regains national electability.

[/ QUOTE ]

Great post. The 1994 Republican revolution was based on the promise of limited government, family values, and pro-business governance. The Republicans have alienated the first two and they don't have much support except for the hard-core war supporters and corporate support. The neocons are terribly unpopular.

GOP will lose the WH in '08 no matter who the nominees are. Therefore, it is a relatively low-risk environment for Dobson et al to flex their muscles and demand their issues continue to be central to GOP platform, etc. By 2010, so-called social conservatives with make up 60% of the party and the party will be <70% of what it is today as traditional conservative pro-business Republicans continue to peel off from the party of intolerance and hatred that the GOP is becoming.

They will win in a landslide if they nominate Ron Paul

Do we really need Elliot's sarcastic Ron Paul posts in every single thread?

Better yet, let's ban any and all criticisms of Ron Paul on this forum.

I think there is some truth in this, especially with the demographic changes. We might be in for a decade or longer stretch of Democratic control. However, they will overreach at some point, and a new wave of Republican reformers will win, like in 1994. Then they will quickly abandon their promises and do business as usual. Then the Democrats will take over again....

I am of the personal opinion that Republicans will never do anything about Abortion because if it were to suddenly become illegal again out of the blue due to their influence that the population all over the country would take about 20 percentage point jump towards the Democrats. It's not really a majority held view anymore among voters, and can only be influenced/changed thru court decisions.

[/ QUOTE ]

CBS News/New York Times Poll. Sept. 4-9, 2007. N=1,263 adults nationwide. MoE ± 3.

.

"Which of these comes closest to your view? Abortion should be generally available to those who want it. OR, Abortion should be available, but under stricter limits than it is now. OR, Abortion should not be permitted."

Generally Available : 34%
Stricter Limits: 39%
Not Permitted: 25%
Unsure: 2%

-There is a majority that are against the current practice, so if a candidate finds a way to restrict abortion he or she might find a way to get a huge boost and not lose too many voters to the Democrats. Many of the Pro-Life supporters migh be so determined about their views that they demand total abolishment of abortions to give the candidate their vote, but wouldnt be surprising if many of those who believe that it should not be permitted at all will tolerate a smaller victory at first. In that case an advocate for tightening the current practice might get the votes needed.

[/ QUOTE ]

I know its not your poll, but that seems like a TERRIBLE way to phrase a poll.

[/ QUOTE ]

Why is it terrible?

[/ QUOTE ]

Because stricter limits is incredibly vague and most people probably have absolutely no clue what the CURRENT limits on abortion are. What % of the group that is in favor of "stricter limits" has in mind something that is already limited like certain partial-birth abortions.

Like the status quo is not an option. Less strict limits is not an option.

The author of the poll might think General Availability is the status quo, but really the status quo is "some restrictions".

[/ QUOTE ]

Yep, this.

As a very liberal Democrat i ask this question: Is it possible for Pro-Buisness Republicans who are socially moderate or liberal or even conservative but not fringey to go to the Libertarians or the Constitution party and make it a viable enough party that it does not conceed every election to the Democrats because the Right is now divided? If that even makes sense.
