I'm in Vegas for a male bonding trip with my dad. It's 2 AM so my dad is asleep, and I'm out roaming the Strip casinos drinking and gambooling. I'm at the Mandalay Bay looking for a craps table, and there's one $10 table that has one tiny spot open, all the way on the edge next to the dealer.

I squeeze into the spot and put down a $10 pass bet. The dice are at the opposite end of the table with this group of 4 or 5 thirty-something investment-banking types wearing ugly $200 shirts that don't fit them.

Everyone at the table is betting the pass line, except for one guy, who's at my end of the table. And he is stylish. He's got on a mink coat, mink hat, mink cane, gold fronts, and he's about 5 foot 3. And he's betting all the chips he has in front of him, about $1000, on don't pass.

And he's talkin' [censored], calling out for the shooter to throw a seven. SEVEN! I know you gonna roll a SEVEN. He goes on.... three and a four... a three and a four.... CHARLES BARKLEY THIRTY-FOUR, CHARLES BARKLEY THIRTY-FOUR.

Shooting rolls a seven and our friend doubles up. Dice goes to the next i-banker, who's at the end of the table (which means that I'll be getting the dice next). Everyone bets pass except for our friend, who bets his $2K on don't pass. Shooter rolls and the point is six.

Our friend in the mink coat goes back to talkin' [censored]. You gonna roll a seven I can feel it. THIRTY-FOUR CHARLES BARKLEY. The shooter's roll goes on forever, not rolling a six or a seven...

Shooter takes the dice and mink coat is calling it out THIRTY-FOUR CHARLES BARKLEY THIRTY-FOUR CHARLES BARKLEY. Just as the shooter is about to let go of the dice, I open my mouth for the first time and call out...

THIRTY-THREE LARRY BIRD

Shooter rolls a hard six. Send the mobneys.

1.Russell
2.Chamberlain
3.Jordan
4.Johnson
5.Bird

[/ QUOTE ]

I intentionally left Russell and Chamberlain out mainly due to the fact that the success that they had was mainly because of their size. Also, when Russell when his 11 championships there were like 8 teams in the league and the competition wasnt close to what it has been in the last 25 years or so.

So my list is:
1. Jordan
2a. Johnson
2b. Bird

[/ QUOTE ]

You should have left Jordan off your list because of his jumping ability. If size is such an advantage why aren't we arguing about Artis Gilmore being in here. Just being tall doesn't guarantee greatness. Yao Ming has basically the same height advantage Wilt and Russell had in their day. Why isn't he scoring 100 a game or winning 11 championships?

I'd say Shaq also is close to belonging on this list.

Note the fact that there was 8 teams when Russell won all his championships. For Chamberlain he was just head and shoulders above everyone at his time. Being a pro basketball player wasnt a well-paying job in his era so naturally the competition just wasnt there. Im not saying he wasnt great, but Shaq or Yao would have been just as dominant as him if they had played at his time, and there is no way either of them belong in the top 3 discussion.

As far as I'm concerned having such an opinion tells me you have something like Asperger's syndrome and you should be aware of it.

I know someone with Asperger's and he knows more about sports than anyone else I know, so I dont think thats his problem. Saying you'd take Dr J over Bird is inexplicable. I cant even think of a word to describe how stupid that is.
