University Reading List (politcal books). Any recommended additions?
I'm starting a degree in Politic's next year and have complied a list of books (loosely categorised) to read in preperation (and of general interest) and was wandering if anyone has any recommendations for either books to take off, or to add. I have already read alot of the anarchist and socialist writings (other than those listed) and as such would most like to hear recommendations for economic books and books concerning current issues; globalisation, Iraq, etc. Below is the list I have compiled so far all of which I have yet to read (in their entirety):

I can't believe it's me saying this, but get a life? [/ QUOTE ] I'm interested in politics and my reading of political books has completely comsumed my reading of fiction. Degree doesnt start till next Ocotber, so reading 1 book a week hardly warrants such a jibe. |

Based on your list and the current curriculum in politics I believe that you should read more empirical literature; and given general trends in the social sciences you probably should read something on evolution. For economics, you should read stuff in political economy as that is what faculty in a Politics department will be working with, not economics as a whole.
I would suggest, in order of importance: Growing Public, Peter Lindert (empirical/political economy) States and Markets (A Primer in Political Economy, Adam Przeworski Hierarchy in the Forest, Boehm Evolution of Cooperation, Axelrod Blank Slate, Pinker |

Hmmm...as for taking off...definitely take off Hegel's books. His works are extremely difficult and obscure and almost no social scientists in the English speaking world are heavily influenced by him. An introduction to him by a contemporary author should be enough. (Relatedly, Rawls Theory of Justice definitely should be read in lieu of Nozick if you are only going to read one contemporary classic...It is exponentially more influential; most political theorists compare their own theory to Rawls's explicitly and do not even mention Nozick; in fact of you only read one book on political theory/philosophy period it probably should be Rawls's Theory of Justice; you simply can't understand contemporary political theory without underestanding it).

Reading up on Hegel is interesting, but reading Hegel directly is tough. Locke sucks and slugging through an entire book of his would be a shame. Try to read some Nietzsche.

The Ethics of Liberty by Murray Rothbard. It's even available free online in pdf and mp3.
Ambitious list, though. Good luck with it. |
