ive been playing guitar since late high school, but never got any type of formal training until my second year of community college where i took some beginning guitar and jazz improv classes. i really loved it, so much in fact i switched my major to music after being accepted into several UCs for business econ. i'm completing my first semester of the music program at pasadena city college, which actually has a great jazz program. i'm going for a degree in jazz performance.

i'd love to talk to others here who are into jazz (or starting to get into jazz).

You sound pretty good considering how long you've been playing but all I have to say is listen to some Miles Davis from like the mid '50s to learn how to use space.

A little surprised and a little saddened that there aren't many drummers out there (yet).

Played piano from when I was about 7 until about 12. I knew I wanted to play drums when I was about 10, and started at 12. Kinda wish I would've kept up with piano, but oh well. Played in all the bands in high school: concert, jazz, pep, marching. Currently the drumline instructor at my old high school....really love watching/listening to drum corps. Played in a few bands with friends through high school, nothing major. Played in concert band one semester of college, but my major was too tough and I needed the extra time. During the summer I play timpani for my hometown's municipal band...easiest money I've ever made.

Equipment wise not very baller...still rockin' my Tama Rockstar i've had since 8th grade. Two Paiste crashes, Sabian china, and Zildjian hi hat and ride. Just purchased a Roland TD-3SW electric set for my apartment which is pretty fun.

I also love jazz and want some recommendations on some good big band artists/albums (i.e. Buddy Rich big band) and smaller combo type groups (i.e. Dave Holland).
