Sidney Crosby/Alex Ovechkin/John Tavares challenging Gretzky's career records

[/ QUOTE ]

Maybe for penalty minutes. None of these guys will remotely approach Gretzky's scoring records.

He has a chance, but only if the NHL changes its rules drastically.

Crosby scored 120 points last seasons (36 goals, 84 assists). Gretzky played in the league 13 years before he had a season with as few as 120 points. In 6 of those seasons, he had at least 120 assists. He didn't have a full season with as few as 84 assists until he was with the Rangers.

You really think he'll be retired for 5 consecutive years at any point in the next 20?

Sidney Crosby was 19 years old last season. You think he's topped out at 130 points?

He will not approach any of Gretzky's single season records. However, I do expect him to average 160-170 points a season for the prime of his career, and if his career lasts longer than Gretzky's, he could get there.

Same with Ovechkin and Gretzky's goal records, as in Gretz's later career his scoring dropped off considerably. While Ovechkin has no shot at Gretzky's actual records, if he can average 60-65 goals for the next ten years, he'll have a shot at them. With Ovechkin I find it more unlikely because his style of play should lead to injury.

I look forward to pro soccer in the U.S. becoming somewhere near the level of that in europe.
Also, I look forward to the day when ESPN spends 24 hours without mentioning a single sporting event in a day of music and celebrity garbage, so I can make fun of it like everybody used to do with MTV.
