Why do you care if you can run sub-6?

How old are you?

What's your BMI?

Your resting heart rate?

Your blood pressure?

If your heart rate is over 85 beats/min, trying to run sub-6 is insane. You would get a heart attack.

Running intervals both hurt and get you injured. If you're a natural you would be able to break 6 without ever running intervals. Just run greater distance. Run at different speeds. Don't run fast more than two days a week.

Run local 5K races. They're scheduled nearly everywhere in the USA. And try to run the entire distance at the same pace. Don't start too fast.

What does about 7 minutes mean? There is a big difference between 7:30 and 7:01.

My resting hr is ridiculously high - like 90, and a sub-6 mile would be cake for me. I also have way more mass than is optimal for middle/long distance running.

If you're under 50 and not obese/horrible family history I seriously doubt running really hard or doing anything at high intensity is going to "guarantee a heart attack".

That shizzle is funny.

The best way to lower your mile time is not to run miles. You want to run longer distances and shorter distances. Run a bunch of 400m and a bunch of 5k.

But your goal is still ridiculously easy. Maybe I'll do this myself for beach season in the spring. Do my cardio as prep for running a sub 6 minute mile.

Yeah srsly WTF at the post above Smiley?

A couple of points...

He cares about a 6 minute mile because it's a personal goal, and a good one for a recreational runner.

A 6 minute mile is not a big deal and in no way life threatening.

Running invtervals will not get you hurt and injured. It will get you in much better shape. You can do speed workouts 3-5 times a week safely.

Huh?? Just stretch and warm up, you'll be fine

If you are on a track try doing some 400m intervals. (1 lap) Its not fun.

If the only thing you know about someone is their resting heart rate, then the only thing you know about them is their resting heart rate.

Frank Shorter's RHR was 75, and he ran a marathon at sub 5min/mile pace.

I might have misunderstood what was intended by "speed work", but I'd be surprised if intervals 3-5 a week was a good strategy for a recreational runner at any age. Of course, I'll never know if it would work for me personally, because I'll never try it.

edit: come to think of it. If someone's RHR is zero... hmmm.

My statement of 3-5 times per week obviously depends on the intensity and volume of the intervals. Hell, you could do them 7 days a week if you do sets of strides on the infield after longer, slower recovery runs.

Why do you care if you can run sub-6? -I have a reason, does it really matter?
How old are you?- 23

What's your BMI?- also 23

Your resting heart rate?- not sure, but normal range

Your blood pressure?- on the high end of normal, but I believe it to be that the last time it was taken I was fairly stressed.

What does about 7 minutes mean? There is a big difference between 7:30 and 7:01. - I was timed at exactly 7:08 I think

Well then this might tell you the ignorance of (some of) your audience: it wasn't obvious to me. Yes I did suspect that speed work meant other drills and other intensities then what I typically associate with the word intervals -- but I wasn't sure, and I'm glad for the clarification.

I never did speed work. My PR for the 10K is 36.03. That's 5:47/m for 6.2 miles. I was running over 60 miles a week.
