in terms of lifetime warp3, it's like 170 to 124 in favor of Ripken. Gwynn was a much better hitter, but corner outfielders who hit like him are easier to find than SS's who hit like Ripken.

if you look at the first 1/2 of the careers, it is Ripken by a long shot. but the downside of each career was pretty similar.

i have no doubt gwynn's one of the best ever but ripken beats him in all aspects...

Well, except for, you know, OPS, BA, and SB.

I actually don't think RBI is that great of a comparison because, if I remember correctly, Gwynn did not hit in an RBI producing spot in the lineup (granted, it's partly because he didn't have a ton of power, but he no doubt would've had more RBI hitting elsewhere in the order).

I think Gwynn was a better player than Ripken except for power, but if I was going to choose one to draft first, I'd pick Ripken because he was leaps and bounds better offensively than pretty much every shortstop in the 80's except Robin Yount (and Yount was in CF by the end of the decade because of an arm injury). Having a guy like that at SS was a major advantage.

Its Ripken, although i never liked him and loved gwynn. Gwynn has some awesome stats, like 434 strikeouts and more than 3100 hits. But you still have to take Ripken, plus you would know he was gonna have the streak thus increasing revenue much more than gwynn. And hes white. Easy choice of Ripken.

Anyone want to provide some statistical evidence that Ripken's defense is "average" or "below average"?

Go ahead.

That was the 1980 draft. Gwynn was in the 1981 draft. Ripken weas already playing AAA ball.

That's not right. Gwynn's "downside" was that he was injured, yet still productive in his final two seasons. Ripken posted OPS+ numbers 93, 89, 95, and 73 in four of his five seasons as a 3B, while missing half the season in his one good year.

"If you could go back into time to 1980 as a baseball GM" would you intentionally make your team suck so that you could draft Barry Bonds?
