Default is this a new scam?

i just got this email today, and i thought it was weird considering
a) my landlord has a key so she can come in whenever
b) a few weeks ago she already checekd our fire alarms
c) i dont have an ADT alarm system
d) i don't live in a "building". its a 3 apartment house.

anyone every get an email like this? any good ideas for messing with him?

Joe, on Oct. 14, 2006, a service man from ADT will be at the building between the hours of 12 P.M. and 5 P.M.

It is very important to have this inspection of a alarm system that was installed in the apts. for your protection against fire. The system is connected to the fire department and police dept.

It is also important that someone be there to let the man in to make his inspection. We are trying to protect you all against fire, and carbon monoxiode from occulrring.

Also look around the apt. and see if you can locate a fire detector, and a carbon monoxide detector, which would be plugged into a socket.
The fire detector will be located on your ceiling, in one of the rooms. Once located, please inspect same, to see if there are any batteries inside.

Joe my sister and I are trying to make the building as safe as possible for everyone who lives in it; so if you won't be home, please arrange to either give you key to your friend to apt. sit, or maybe one of the tenants would be kind enough to do you that favor so the inspection can be done.

This is costing us money to arrange this for your safety, please find a way to accomodate us. Let me know what your decision will be.

Sounds like this is legit. Most theifs do not want you home when they come by.

Contact landlord. If they do not know about this contact police and have the police be the ones to let "Joe" into your house.

Do not attempt vigilante justice because if this is a scam and they are trying to rob you while asking you to also be home then they will definitely have a weapon and brass balls.

No, it is most definitely not a scam. We know because we have a direct line with your landlord. Put your key under your doormate and leave the premises while they make sure your nonexistent ADT alarm system works properly.

When they said "Joe", thats me. My name is in my gmail account so that would be easy to figure out.
I forwarded it to my landlord but she might take forever to respond, so if I don't hear from her by the end of today I'll go down and ask her tomorrow.

this language sounds suspicious, but landlords can be tards

anyway, contact landlord ASAP and then police if necessary

This email sounds really suspicious, particularly the fact that they mention "Joe" several times. It really does sound like a nigerian scam type email, although the fact that this one is asking for entrance to your apartment while you are there is also weird. If I had to guess, I'd say its either a genius Nigerian type scam, that ends with you "making your next rental payment online via direct deposit to your landlords Nigerian Bank Account," or its legit.

does your landlord have your email address? if so, why?

If not, then this is even stranger...

It seems unlikely that it would be a scam. Otherwise it would say something like "Please mail your bank accounts numbor to these telephone for your safely keep money.

My guess is this e-mail was meant for someone else. If you e-mail address has "joe" in it anywhere, maybe someone was trying to send this e-mail to someone else. Maybe respond and tell them they have the wrong address.
