[ QUOTE ]
I've never been so happy to pay a drop in my life after reading that.

[/ QUOTE ]

Yeah well, I like playing at the casino but I also enjoy good home games where I can kick back and relax and still win money but do it while enjoying the company of friends or acquaintances.

[ QUOTE ]
And I stayed for exactly one hour, through 8 hands, with each hand lasting almost 10 minutes as these guys had no concentration and complained about every single thing. Every hand ended with each player trying to out slow roll the others and then one player would retrieve his cards from the muck and put them up on the board to show that he would have made the nuts if he hadn't folded pre-flop. Aaaargh.

[/ QUOTE ]
I too am middle age and I have pretty high tolerance level. But the 8 hands in an hour would have driven me over the edge.

How old is your coworker? And assuming he is a poker player like you, how does he handle this game on a regular basis?

He's older than me by 5 years but still quite a bit younger than the rest of those guys. He doesn't report directly to me but I can have a lot of say in his career here. He's not even close to my level at poker but he's been asking me a lot of questions about the game so when he invited me to this game I thought I'd give it a try.

When I came to my office today my admin told me that he had already been by twice to see me. I'm going to let him suffer for a while though.

So I arrive and first thing I notice is that the home is an effing mansion. I'm talking about 26 rooms with 2 pools type of mansion and I am feeling a bit intimidated as I walk through the portal (not door mind you but portal).

[/ QUOTE ]

You referenced this below, as well. I'm missing what was so noteworthy about "mansion" to this story, other than your expectations. Rich people can't play for low stakes?

[ QUOTE ]
I can already feel the lifeblood drain out of me as I realize that I am going to be in for hours of nits on parade.

I tell them that I only play NL and PLO and that I'd stay for an hour but that I was leaving after that. And I stayed for exactly one hour"

[/ QUOTE ]

I know limit isn't appealing when you're looking for big-bet games, but couldn't you just have chalked up the evening to a simple game of cards for fun and NOT come across as an arrogant SOB?

You could have donked it up for a few hours, then gracefully extracted yourself and turned down future invitations.

I understand that you felt mislead by your slave, and you could have chewed him out later, but I think your reaction was a bit over the top, Rott. Unless you are 100% against meeting new people and playing to play....

Hell, you could have treated it as training for not tilting. :P

Gawd Larry. You're no fun.

Honestly though, limit is not my game. I find it to be boring and maybe that's just me but it is what it is. I had expected NL and that's what I was primed for. When I saw the mansion I immediately felt that this would be a great action game - playing with people who had money. Maybe that was a bad assumption but it's not every day that I am invited to a home game at a freakin mansion on the Hills. And just to be clear, this wasn't just some large home, it was huge and so was the estate it was on.

As for my "slave". LOL. He is a colleague and I am senior to him but he doesn't work directly for me and he definably doesn't need to impress me. OTOH, he knows that it's not a good idea to piss us off either.

Nothing much to report. Obviously I had calmed down way before the workweek and I just wanted to let him suffer a bit. He bought me lunch and we had a laugh about the whole thing. I did mention to a cute lady here that he was doing extremely well at the poker tables(this lady is attracted to money)so now I'm waiting for the other shoe to drop when she finds out the reality. Heh.
