Re: Poker and Drug Testing
[ QUOTE ]
[ QUOTE ] The OP is absolutely correct! Most people would say that the best poker of alltime is Stu Unger and he was a cokehead. Coincidence? I think If poker is going to be taken seriously as a competitive sport it is integral that we have a governing body make sure that people aren't taking coke or shooting heroin during the games. Do not even get me started on Mariuana either. I have heard rumors that a lot of these online pros smoke weed during their sessions and they are all amazing players. Drugs give people an unfair advantage and we need to eradicate our game before people start thinking that poker players are just a bunch of degenerates. [/ QUOTE ] I think your totally wrong. Stu might have done coke but not when he was playing poker. Coke is too edgy and requires to much coke to sucessfully use it to play poker. I think some of the add drugs might be better [/ QUOTE ] Ungar, and alot of other pros, used coke to fuel their marathon sessions back in the day. Stuey just liked it so much that he let it take over his life. |

Re: Poker and Drug Testing
Lol @ everybody bashing OP Granted this has been discussed before and OP didnt bring up anything new, but that doesnt make any of your lame and naive arguements any better. I know that if I made a big FT and for some reason was totally beat physically I would probably do a little line of speed if possible. Those who say that drugs would make you play better must be leveling, but I also think some posters in this thread overestimates the impact a small amount of coke/speed has on the mind while it has large impact on the physic state.. I have played sessions of solid poker while being on speed/coke and if I hadnt been under the influence I would have been at sleep.. |

[/ QUOTE ] side note: lol, at competitive "sport" - legitimate competition would have been better [ QUOTE ] Drugs give people an unfair advantage and we need to eradicate our game before people start thinking that poker players are just a bunch of degenerates. [/ QUOTE ] People who are going to think of poker players as degenerate are pretty much going to do so with or without drugs. I think that it would not be feasible to test players, especially since many drugs they might use could be legal in certain situations (i.e. ritalin, beta blockers, etc.) How would you choose which drugs to test for? I think there are probably just as many (if not more) instances where drugs are harmful to the player as there are where they are helpful, so it probably all evens out anyway. Plus, the casinos wouldn't want to spend the money or reduce their profits by limiting the entries to sober/clean people. |

Re: Poker and Drug Testing
Don't forget to add psychadelics to the list of banned drugs.
I was played heads up with a buddy of mine, who was shrooming, and he was able to concentrate, let his psyche drift upward from his body, and look over my should to see my hole cards. Fortunately I had done a ton of coke, so I was able to overcome the disadvantage. I am fairly certain Phil Ivey went to a special school in the Himalayas for something akin to this mind-body projection ability. |

Re: Poker and Drug Testing
the use of aderal and ritalin-like drugs is actually a pretty significant point. i know guys that take the drug before poker sessions and it helps them stay alert at the table for longer. they also use it to study for school.

Re: Poker and Drug Testing
I played poker on coke before.
I made this huge bluff, the guy was thinking for about 5 minutes, my heart almost jumped out of my throat, it was beating so fast. If he would of taken another minute before folding, I would of just told him, I was bluffing to end this torture. |

I have had a strong win rate over the last 5 years and I, well you know where im going. |

Re: Poker and Drug Testing
I would much rather everyone at my table be f'ed up on whatever substance they choose then sit there sipping water and contemplating every move.
However, those of you who think that pot, coke, etc... enhance your play are either very weak to begin with or living a lie. Some drugs may make keep you up longer and may even make you focus better but is the game really that complex that you are not going to make similar moves sober? This is such a non-issue. |
