Upgrade bathroom to marble
I've got a shower stall and separate tub in my condo and am considering an upgrade. How much am I looking at to have some install a marble shower stall (walls and floorpan and a seat) and to redo the tile around the tub as marble? Anybody got any experience doing this or comments on results/usage? Could I do this myself?

Re: Upgrade bathroom to marble
I used to work with a contractor, I would not try to do this yourself. Marble is difficult to cut and make look good if you havent done it before. I have put in a bathroom and the cuts needed to line up perfectly. Dont remember the cost.

Re: Upgrade bathroom to marble
I am pretty handy, but I won't mess with marble. Friend of mine is in the tile business and he claims that since marble absorbs moisture, it is not as sanitary as ceramic tile. Meh, it could just be that he hates working with marble.

Re: Upgrade bathroom to marble
I was in the stone business for about 7 years, mostly sales but I've helped on more than a few installs. I generally argee with most of the above comments. I would stay away from marble for the bathroom because it is very soft. Many household products will etch the finish of polished marble (almost any bathroom cleaner). Marble is also quite brittle especially in the lighter colors with lots of veining. A general rule of thumb is the darker the stone the harder it is.
Traverine with a tumbled (rough) finish works much better in bathrooms. I have used it in several of my flip houses and gotten great results. Use a typical wet tile saw with a stone blade and you will have no trouble cutting it. Travertine Bathroom |
