Anyhow, I am doing this MiMo thing to death. I am trying to go pure unarmed, but maybe that is working against me? Also, with that character, should I be eschewing armor altogether? I know the problem with wearing heavy, but what about other types?

[/ QUOTE ]

Hmm, well pure unarmed is definitely comparable in power to the long blades/axes/mace&flails. If you're going dodging/unarmed, you want to wear leather armour as soon as you find it and you should pick up all robes you find in the game and carry them around. Later when you get a scroll of detect curse you should try on all the uncursed ones--you're looking specifically for a robe of resistance(1 level each of fire&cold resistance).

[ QUOTE ]
I might need to go with another race/class combo, Im not sure.

[/ QUOTE ]

Try Hill Dwarf Berserker and just go with Axes and Heavy Armour--they're simple and powerful and a common first victory. Once you start getting deeper into the game, learn about scrolls of acquirement/evocations/rods as Hill Dwarves are great rodslingers.

All that said, no matter what combo you choose, you're going to die *a lot* for awhile so don't get discouraged.

Another thing: It might be worthwhile to try out a bunch of race/class combos, pick one you like and *then* specialize. Here is a list I posted on rgrm:

<font class="small">Code:</font><hr /><pre>-Fighter-

Any Minotaur
Hill Dwarf Berserker or Gladiator
Mountain Dwarf Gladiator or Hunter
Troll* Berserker

-Spellcaster-

Deep Elf Conjurer, Fire Elementalist, Ice Elementalist or Summoner

-Evoker-

Spriggan* Enchanter or Transmuter </pre><hr />

Johan Strandell(very good player) also recommends:

<font class="small">Code:</font><hr /><pre>
MiCK - good at melee fighting, a god that's useful right from the
start, good ranged attacks, and friends to keep you company when you
don't want to be alone with that dreadful hydra.

DSCK - Xom is probably best left alone for a beginner, but with Makhleb
it's similar to the combo above. A lot depends on the mutations you end
up with, but you'll always have fairly varied games.

MfTM - Takes a while to get the hang of, but once you get Spider Form
and Blade Hands everything becomes really easy for a while. One of the
few hybrids that's as powerful as specialists.

MD/HDHe - Elyvion is kind to beginners, both for the healings and for
taking the pain out of god management. (If you want to win you'll
probably need to collect weapons and sacrifice them, but that's only
when you get deeper down.) </pre><hr />

I actually tried out hill dwarf berserker right after I posted it and loved it. Was really rolling until I did the dumbest thing ever. I ate 3 chunks of beetle, got super poisoned and just wasted away because at that point I had no way to cure myself. Although I just realized I might have bought myself more time by invoking berserk...ugh. Anyhow, thanks for the tip on the leather armor for the MiMo, I had been sticking exclusively to robes. Yet another Crawl lesson learned.

Well, you really should have stopped after the first one, but make sure to check out the food spoiler.

Very helpfull. Any idea why some kills leave corpses and some don't? I've tried varying weopons, spells, but it seems random.

Well, that's the intent of the designers, they want a certain amount of food in the game and they adjusted corpse generation until it was at the level they wantes. So far as I know your killing method is irrelevant--it is random.

Damn I'm good. I just won again. This time with a Centaur--widely considered the most difficult race in the game.

[/ QUOTE ]

4th win lol.

Not sure if anyone is still interested in Crawl, but I got win #5. I'm still happy to answer all questions, hehe.

How do you get the offense and defense to survive past level 8-9?

I keep getting to that point and then you run into things that smite, or fireball, or otherwise deal huge amounts of damage.

Last game I thought I was set up pretty well, rings of various things for protection to swap in and out, but in the end some freaking @ with fireball popped up while I was resting from a battle with a Yak and it was all over.

I seem to go fine...fine...yea..kick butt..good...BLAM. Freaking wasps have killed promising characters a couple times with their damn immobilization poison.

Running away.

After awhile you learn to be paranoid. See an orc coming? Run now, he could have an orc priest or orc wizard behind him. You see a sleeping Sigmund? Forget it, run away and avoid that area for awhile. "You hear a roar." It's a Hydra, time to ascend and explore some other part of the dungeon for awhile. After you learn to run, you learn to use up your scarce wands and potions and scrolls to extend your character's life span.

It might help to watch some or all of the Spriggan Venom Mage video I posted. I think the link expires today or tomorrow. I use a lot of tactics and strategy that can be applied in any game.

When you rest, rest on the edge of the known map. This is counterintuitive, but monsters in the fog of war areas usually haven't been woken up yet, so they're unlikely to attack you. Of course, sometimes you just die and there's nothing you could have done, but it happens a lot less often than it seems.

Well, I just lost a 24th level(27th is max) character to a red wasp(very stupidly--could have avoided death easily). Use scrolls of blinking to get away from them i fyou have to. For most situations in Crawl there is a way out. Also, they're trivial if you have a source of poison resistance equipped.
