I'm actually extremely generous to people and services worth it. For example, I do tip when I get a haircut; even though I think it's preposterous I'm spending $15 on a cut, the dudes usually do a great job and, when my hair is dirty, they'll wash it without adding it on as a mandatory cost, etc. etc. So I tip $5 no problem.

[/ QUOTE ]

Are you kidding, only 33% on a haircut?

have you never ordered beers at a bar before? if you are paying cash for each drink or round, it is completely standard to leave a tip ($1/drink, less for several is ok) when you receive the drink ($5 drink, you leave $6, or when he brings you change for a $20, you leave a $1). obviously if you're running a tab it's different, but you're saying you were paying cash for the drinks, so while it may have been rude for the bartender to say anything, it was perfectly reasonable for him to assume you were most likely stiffing him.

[/ QUOTE ]

I understand it is normal to tip for every drink. However, the atmosphere of this place and the situation made it feel acceptable to just tip in the end.

When I left the guy a $20 for the first round, he left my change on the bar and then went over to the two other people at the bar that he had been talking with since I sat down. He didn't really give me time to give him a tip; and I didn't put that money in my pocket, it remained on the table.

I just thought it was a dick move to say something like this to a customer.

since vyse is too smart for me to beat in an argument, f it i am just banning him.

Wow that was the most inevitable thing since the sun coming up in the east this morning.

Forget quote quote quote quote quote /quote /quote /quote /quote /quote, a bigger indiscretion is people copying quotes and then using quick reply and attributing the quote to the wrong person. Even forum stalwarts like Aloysius and tdarko do this all the time. I write enough retarded crap, I don't need the retarded crap of others to be credited to me because of quick reply laziness. Srs bsns indeed.

stinky - IMO, him asking if I wanted singles is the same as him asking if I planned on leaving a tip. This to me was a display of exceptionally bad manners.

the only time i've ever stiffed in a restaurant was in this small desert cafe in little italy. The waitress was a total complete bitch and when I left I flung a nickel down on the table and said "this is more than you deserve". Looking back I wished I had said something wittier.

Since last month about 50% of NYC cabs now have credit card readers. At least 75% of the time I'm in one of those, the driver tries to tell me the card reader doesn't work. When I then explain to him that he needs to hit the "stop" button on his meter and he better do so before I call the police, the card reader is magically fixed, and he then gets no tip. Or a $0.01 tip depending on how much of a dick I feel like.

Tonyp,

Explain to someone who rides in a cab like twice a year exactly what's going on here. If he doesn't hit the stop button can he pocket the cash without giving any to his taxi pimp, or does he just not think you'll tip him if you pay with credit?

hey, a tony p sighting!

what's up with the cabbies not telling you the CC reader works? does it mean they have to report tips and thus pay taxes? do they hate the hassle? or do they just find that people have an easier time stiffing if they're just signing a slip?

BTW, whenever i pay by CC i tip in cash if at all possible for this exact reason. industry people who are observant will appreciate it.

The whole structure in this country is rediculous
If i go to a bar and order a round og 5 beers I should tip a guy 5 bucks for 10 seconds of work opening my beers?
On the other hand the percentage thing is out of wack as well-
I go to a place in vegas that has 2.99 steak and eggs (i loved this at the orleans) and Im really just gonna tip 45-60 cents since thats 15-20 %?

I tend to overtip in resteraunts by most peoples standards, but if you drop the food off, go talk to your friends for 20 mins, then drop the check off and think youre getting anything you're sadly mistaken. Waitresses are content in a decent place to be [censored] at their job becuase there still gonna make decent money. This should not be encouraged.
