These are absolutely necessary in L.A. If you don't push the button at some crosswalks, then when the light turns green the walk dude doesn't come on -- and if that's the case, the green turns yellow after like 2 seconds and you're screwed. Obviously it won't make the red light go green... but what it does do is make it so WHEN the red light goes green, it keeps the walk sign on so you can have enough time to cross the major L.A. boulevards.

I walk to work and back in West Hollywood, so these things are vital to me every day at 2 major intersections.
