tool to measure distance ran?
I just started playing indoor soccer and thought it would be very interesting to track how much I run during a game and also to track it over time, I would assume as I get more fit that I would increase my distance both because I stay on the field longer without substitution and because I am more active when on it.
can anyone suggest a good tool that can track this kind of thing but not affect my play in an indoor soccer game? tx. |

Re: tool to measure distance ran?
I think most pedometers are going to be very inaccurate for the kind of running you do in a soccer game. I've never seen one that doesn't depend on avg stride distance.

Re: tool to measure distance ran?
The Garmin thing probably won't work for soccer because you need to attach a part to your shoelaces.

Re: tool to measure distance ran?
There are small solid state accelerometer devices that can do this pretty well. I've only used non-consumer devices, but I imagine there is some sort of consumer level device. I just did a random quick web search and found this thing for cars -
http://www.beltronicspro.com/fx.html BTW wearing a consumer-grade accelerometer in a fanny pack or something might give bad results, for best results you want to tape it to your back or something relatively stable so it doesn't feel a lot of extra accelerations; the consumer devices have a low sampling rate and also a hard threshold so they work well only for reasonable smooth motions (any human being's center of mass moves very smoothly by these standards) Here, this page lists some consumer accelerometer based pedometers : http://www.pedometers.com/mechanism.asp |

they make GPS units that attach to your arm that will do this. I've seen them in REI
