Default beat: \"oldies\" station playing songs from my youth

heard recently:

Bruce Springsteen "Glory Days"
Fine Young Cannibals "She Drives Me Crazy"
Tears For Fears "Shout"

I mean, I know I'm not a young dude any more, but them's not oldies songs. them's quality 80s fare.

Hate to break the news to you, but "80s" is 20 years ago or more. When we were kids, all the stuff from the 60's and 70's was on the oldies station, this is simply natural progression.

ok, so what are songs from the late 50s and 60s now? are they no longer oldies? they stay on the oldies station, because lemme tell you, my various aunts that listen to the oldies station will hear some of these 80s songs and go "wtf, man, this is crap. put yesterday on or i'll be angry." weeeell, i haven't actually discussed this oldies station progression with them, and i can almost guaranteee that they wouldn't actually say 'wtf, man, this is crap. put yesterday on or i'll be angry" but i'm sure the gist of what they're saying is the same.

fact remains, 80s music is far more niche than 50s/60s/early 70s, and probably shouldn't be mixed in.

but then again, i guess stirrup pants are trying to come back (plz god no)

songs from the 50s and 60s don't get played on the radio anymore because the people who listened to them are dead

question: do you hear 'never gonna give you up' on that station? that's a classic oldie

I think you're assuming that 80s music is completely replacing stuff from the 50s and 60s when that's not the case. It's simply an expansion of the available pool of songs to choose from. It's a sound business decision from the radio industry's point of view, as there are more people getting older all the time ie. potential listeners.

Are you talking about the entire decade's worth of sound, or a particular genre? Because there were a ton of distinct genres in the 80s that were all very popular. It wasn't all Flock of Seagulls nonsense.
