yeah, I think she's pretty great...can one of you musicians explain all those foot switches she's messing with? Obviously she's making a noise, setting it to repeat, and doing it again and again...but is this common? I don't think I've ever seen it before. Very cool.

People have been doing stuff like this for a while, it's just kind of unwieldy for performance (you don't have to sell a ton of albums before another guitarist becomes cost effective). It's also relatively common in the electronic/dj scene. In fact there's a bit of a subculture centered around doing this sort of thing. Most of them use looping based software and a laptop instead of the simple pedal system it looks like Turnstall's using, but it's more or less the same stuff.

Here's a few links:

Beatboxer Kid Beyond shows how he does it.

One that I really like:
Final Fantasy Final Fantasy- This Modern Love (cover)
- he uses the violin (he is the violonist for the Arcade Fire)

she looks like an amalgamation of elka from the real world boston and jewel. the result is not as enticing as i would have imagined.

good musician though.

She's cute and I don't dig that look at all. However, I can't get past the raspy voice. It works for the music, but I can only picture her getting that voice by downing bottles of Jack straight while chain smoking.

hot, isn't it?

I prefer Chan Marshall aka Cat Power. She's in her mid-30s and heartbreakingly beautiful.

Love, love, love Cat Power.
The Greatest is a fantastic album and You Are Free is just as good. Her music is so vulnerable and broken soul sounding. Beautiful.

This thread has made me realize that while I often like their music (esp Cat Power and the song "Metal Heart"), I don't find these artsy/indy chicks too sexy. I like the Indigo Girls, too, fwiw.

Dom,

Howie Day is the first guy I saw do a ton of that stuff. Was pretty amazing the first time I saw it live.

Check out this video for an example (I've seen him do much more multilayered stuff than this live): http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=p6OOUH6UmeE

A,

Chan Marshall is hot and great. She is wacko when she performs, though. I saw her a couple of years ago and a few minutes into the show she needed all the lights turned out and she couldn't really face the audience at all during the show. Sounded great, though.
