Default $1/$2 NL Live -- Double Barrel Turn -- Reasonable Or Spew?

I sat down at this table a few orbits ago and haven't voluntarily played a hand yet. Table seems pretty bad in general, but haven't seen villain really get out of line or anything (aside from straddling every opportunity). There has been a comment or two about me not playing anything.

Villain straddles UTG, Hero raises to $12 UTG+1 with 8 [img]/images/graemlins/spade.gif[/img] 8 [img]/images/graemlins/diamond.gif[/img], folded to Villain who calls (heads-up).

Flop: A [img]/images/graemlins/spade.gif[/img] 9 [img]/images/graemlins/heart.gif[/img] 3 [img]/images/graemlins/club.gif[/img] ($27)
Villain checks, Hero bets $18, Villain calls.

Turn: 6 [img]/images/graemlins/diamond.gif[/img] ($63)
Villain checks, Hero bets $40, Villain calls.

River: 3 [img]/images/graemlins/heart.gif[/img] ($143)
Villain checks, Hero checks.

All comments welcome and appreciated... NL is hard

Don't like the turn bet. Aside from a gutshot wheel draw on the flop, what could he call you with that you beat, or that he may lay down to the turn bet. If he called PF with ace rag and on the flop, he is going to call on the turn.

Double barreling is a great play live, but probably not in this situation.

I'm just making the switch to NL, so keep that in mind.

I think you turn bet here because given your preflop action the player is going to assume a flop bet, the turn bet is the semi-bluff or to force him out. I think I play this hand the same way, betting the river if he folds the river with any degree of frequency.

Ok--there are definately good spots to double barrel in NL but this is just not one of them. You have to assume your trying to get him off of top pair and that is just not something your want to have to do in order to win a pot.
