Default Heads up NL Cash vs. someone who basically only 3-bets from the BB

Hey, I got asked this question about how to deal with this scenario, and I while I think that my suggestion is correct, I'm curious what other people had to say, and I think it's something to think about and can help other people.

"Well, it depends how tight he is from the BB and how often he is c-betting his 3-bets.

I think I would do a combination of tightening up my raising and then calling his 3-bets more. I think that you can also try limping some hands on the button, because if he's automatically going to raise, limping solves the problem of playing some hands that you don't want to see a 3-bet pot in which you're committing 10% of your stack with. For instance, I'd start limping most lower pocket pairs against this type of person, as I don't like playing them in 3-bet pots vs. someone, but I'd gladly play vs. a 3bb raise. But overall, if you adjust your range such that it is better than his, that with the advantage of position should give you a big enough edge to make up for what you might be losing by not raising the button as much.

let me know if that makes sense,

jeff "

Jeff,

I agree with you on all points.
When you can his 3-bets, you should also float/bluff more than someone with a tight 3-bet range.

I'd 4-bet fairly often on that QQ hand mainly 'cause you're too deep to play this passively. I like your flop and turn play; river depends on reads.

The thing is, I don't really like 4-betting, as I think it makes your hand so transparent. Unless I guess I start widening my 4-betting range. Problem is that if he calls in a 100BB pot, there isnt much postflop poker. But I guess in deeper pots, 4-betting can add something, I guess I should look into doing it more, both with monsters, and some other stuff like maybe JTs

thanks

I recommend you start widening your 4-bet range against light 3-betters.

I 4-bet Axs, KTs+ etc. fairly regularly against aggressive opponents.

And this works against competent players in msnl (3/6,5/10,10/20?) That range seems like spewing to me

you don't do it every time, you only do it if you feel that your opponent is deviating too much from non-exploitable play.

Also, when i 4-bet in position, it's almost always a minraise (with or without a hand). This allows me the get away from the hand if he pushes, but still prevents him from just calling with speculative hands (no implied odds with 100BBs). Basically, it's a great way to leverage your stack. You're committing 25-30BBs whereas he's gotta commit 100 if he wants to continue.

...and yes, it works vs. good players.

Edit: check CTS's blog post on 3/4-betting ranges.
