Default invisibility

so I'm sure most have seen the movie Predator where he has that really cool invisibility technology. While last nite watching the James Bond movie Die another Day ( i think thats it, the one with Halle Berry; damn she is HOT), he had a Jaguar that had the same kind of invisibility feature.

After the scene one of my friends commented very assertively that the army was beginning to use that kind of technology on tanks, covering them with screens and projecting whatever image would be seen behind the tank from that angle to the front. Is this even true?

Most importantly, how long would u speculate before this technology is available to the public, if ever, and what would be some of the hilarious/ horrendous consequences.

I would venture to say it could result in the complete downfall of society, altho that mite be a bit of an exaggeration . But come on, everyone running around in invisible suits; not being as easily held accountable for things they do. Theres no way this could be free of negative externalities.

We're not at invisibility yet, but we're getting there.

Another use could be in aviation where pilots could make cockpit floors transparent.

THAT WOULD SERIOUSLY FREAK ME OUT

A couple of Wired articles regarding this:

Military seeks invisibility cloak
Being Invisible: Next-gen optical camouflage is busting out of defense labs and into the street.

I'm glad someone else noticed that. That struck me as a pretty odd choice for the third most reasonable use.

"Hey guys, we already used camo and surgery; anyone got other ideas for this optical transparency article?"
"Airplane cockpit floors."
"Thanks, Jim!"

I don't think making the bottoms clear would help much. I mean, if you could make the bottoms and everything inside the bottom(Read: you) invisible, it'd be good as all you'd see are two floating afterburners but as it stands, I dunno, I'd rather make myself invisible and watch my neighbors have sex with eachother.
