Default 15/30 44 in the BB

Great 15/30 game in northern California. Villian in this hand is not the reason the game is great. He is definately a thinking player. I have seen him correctly make a weak call down and incorrectly make big lay down prior to this hand. Each time he acted based on his belief of what made sense to him for the other players to be holding.

The only previous confrontation between us consisted of me checkraising a ragged Q hi flop on a total bluff, him raising the turn for a free show down and a whiffed checkraise river when I hit a runner runner flush.

On to the hand.

UTG limps, one fold to villian who limps, a couple of folds and four more limpers. I raise 44 in the BB. All call.

Flop: 9 [img]/images/graemlins/club.gif[/img] 3 [img]/images/graemlins/club.gif[/img] 2 [img]/images/graemlins/diamond.gif[/img]

I bet, one fold to villian who calls, one other caller and everyone else folds. 3-way to the turn.

Turn: Q [img]/images/graemlins/heart.gif[/img]

I bet, villian raises, one fold and I 3-bet in rythm.

I thought the raise preflop was standard in this spot?

I don't like the 3 bet on the turn. Villain isn't raising into 2 players with air. You're drawing to 2 outs (at most) - fold.

I raised thinking he had a Q with a flush draw, or was raising 55, 66, 77, 88 or a 9 for a free showdown

Still a bad play?

Masterful play. A guy raises the turn when he makes top pair, so you 3-bet 44 hoping he just dumps it.

Not sure if you responded before I edited my post to include the full range I put him on.

I dont raise the 44 in this spot, you need to set up against a field like this to met your hand good. I fold to villans raise on turn with ease, YHING and your drawing to the set...

this sounds like a very expensive bluff...especially if you think pair + flush draw is a big enough portion of his range since you have to fire again on the river against those hands...oh yeah, and like joker said, trying to bluff live players off of top pair is no good...

Standard how? There's very little chance you'll win this hand without catching a 4, even if you are aggressively raising to try to push people out. You don't have good position and don't have great odds either, since even if you catch a set you can still lose.
