They don't. That's why it's an "obvious" scam.

There was an obvious hacking attempt directed at players (see email), but:

"Some of the players that have been scammed are certain that they did not download any new software from betfair (ie. trojans), but that there has to be some kind of security glitch in betfairs systems that can be exploited to see the opponents hole cards."

There's no evidence of a security problem with the client/server beyond the players' claims AFAICT, nor is there any explanation in the provided links of the money awarded as compensation. One anonymous source appears in a blog post.

There may or may not be something shady going on, but it's impossible to tell from this post.

Not sure if this is related, but a friend of mine who plays 5/10-25/50 on Betfair got an email a few weeks ago from Betfair support saying something to the effect of they had caught someone cheating, and they were returning funds to all players who lost money to that player. He got a credit in his account for a little over $1500 IIRC. The email didn't say what sort of cheating or who is was. During the same time period I had been playing Betfair 5/10 religiously and got no such email or credit, so I'm assuming this happened at 10/20+, most likely 25/50.

Wow, can't believe this was kept so hush, fair play to Betfair for taking the most decent course of action. [img]/images/graemlins/heart.gif[/img]

Woaah. Remember that guy on Party Poker who a bunch of people thought could see their cards? PlayerLogin I think. Maybe these type of things have been going on for a long time but only now people are realising. I wonder if PlayerLogin was a low number account to..

If you talking about the Party fiasco ages ago it was due to a rouge out-sourced programmer implementing a Trojan in a 'rakeback calculator' meaning he could only see infected opponents cards, so targeted them one at a time at party.

These last two cases (betfair and AP) are more worrying as they're not due to a user's computer being infected.
