Falwell helped establish the idea that Christians should vote Republican. set aside your religious views for a minute. most people (religious or not) don't do due dilligence in researching candidates. so, a lot of Christians vote a party line because of an expectation Falwell helped foster. it doesn't make them lunatics, just lazy when it comes to voting.

I'm sorry for his family, I'm sure they're are people who care for him as a human. Joy isn't the right word but its a similar feeling to when Bush is out of office - relief that someone is no longer spewing verbal vomit to the sheep who follow him. Someone else will step up and fill the vacuum, but maybe with a more positive message (a bit too optimistic I think).
