I voted never, but there's been times when my total was like $2.03 and I handed the girl three bucks and she handed me one back and just pulled cents from the tray, so I would guess that <5 is probably the right answer...

I'd say (at least at stores with the penny trays) that it is two or less.

So,if my bill was $5.02, and I had $5.05 in my pocket, I'd use the pennies (two pennies involved vs three if I use my nickel) but if it was $5.03, I'd use my nickel and leave the $0.02.

That was my reasoning.

FWIW my vote is 4 cents anything below a nickle. I also leave any pennies I get

Yup. And at the deli where I usually eat I'll sometimes just give 6 bucks for a 6.08 bill. I try to balance it though and let them keep the change other times.

Who the [censored] cares about a couple of pennies?

if it 5.02 and you dont use your nickel, i think thats ridiculous. Just give the 3 cents if you hate pennies so that someone who actually could use it when they dont have a nickel.

I also think shorting the deli 8 cents without asking(which I think would be weird in itself) its weird. I would guess they probably have to count their drawers down and if everyone does it they can easily be short a dollar and anything over a dollar we got written up for when I was a cashier. I would bring a few pennies of my own but no one ever just straight up short changed me. If they did, I would have called them out.
