Default HP Laptop Screen Resolution

Hi,

I know a lot of people on here love the Dells, but I'm also looking at the 17" HP dv8000t, which based on the research I've done seems fairly comparable in performance to the E1705 depending on how you customize it. My biggest concern, though, is that the ultrabright screen option for the HP only supports up to 1440 x 900 (1680 x 1050 if you go with just the regular widescreen). I know this makes multi-tabling much more difficult -- but would it extremely worse to work with than the 1920 x 1200 that Dell supports?

I just bought that exact laptop without the ultrabright option, so my resolution is at 1680x1050.

With 3 tables on ultimate bet there is some slight overlap between the top tables and the bottom one, but not too bad. I just didn't think the super bright option was worth losing the resolution.

Is the 1680 x 1050 serviceable for 4-tabling Party? How much better is the 1920 x 1200 than that resolution? Is that difference alone worth making a buying decision over?

Salva,

Did you figure this out? I'm struggling right now to figure out how important it is to get 1920x1200 resolution (especially for someone like me, who never plays more than 4 tables).

No, but I tested the 1440x900, and there is a fair amount of overlap, although it's not terrible. I guess it comes down to personal preference -- can you handle overlap or not. I use a computer for a lot of things other than poker, so I'm going to take that into consideration.

I just read something elsewhere that disturbed me: i.e., someone said that, when it comes to laptops, you can't necessarily switch between resolutions easily.

This is important to me because most of the time I will be using the laptop for wordprocessing, which I assume is not workable with 1900 res.

You change the screen res on a laptop exactly like you change it on a desktop. No difference at all.

FYI, I was referring to a response I got here.

What the guy said specifically was this: "And don't think that you can set the LCD to lower resolution when you need it. LCDs have a native resolution and they mostly are blurry and color distorted when set to non-native. High end LCD monitors ($500+) do better outside of native resolution than lower end models but I have never seen a notebook display with such capabilities."

I'm really not sure I understand what he meant.

Sorry, I didn't realize that is what you were referring to. He is correct. Honestly the same can be said (to a degree) on my Dell 1907FP. It will operate at lower resolutions but it looks so much better and crisper at the native resolution.

Basically everything is going to look it's best, sharpest, crispest etc at the LCD's native resolution. Anything else will look less than great.

Alright, if I want to keep the native resolution, then I need to know whether 1900x1260 will be ok for word processing purposes (as that would remain my primary use for the laptop).

I keep hearing different things about that, and may simply need to find someone with such a laptop resolution so I can look directly. But I would like to know what anyone hear thinks about whether fonts are uncomfortably small at 1900x1260 res (for word processing, using email or anything else that might be affected).
