How do I install a window unit air conditioner machine?
Found one in a cupboard, humidity is unbearable, no idea how this machine works, whether it is supposed to be inside or outside the window etc.
help!

Well the controls face inside and the bulk of the unit is facing outside. You might have to rig a ledge on the outside or a cross brace on the inside.
May I suggest googling the Model and model # and the word manual

Most of it should be outside the window. And it has to slant at a slight angle downward so the water leaks outside the house not inside. Just get it in the window with those 2 things correct and make sure it is a nice tight fit and air is not going out around it too easy and it should work for you.

OK I managed to get it so it securely fastened, tilting 5-10% downwards, with the controls on the inside and the rest out, but the window is quite a bit wider than the unit. Is this a problem and what can I do about it?

Look on the side of the AC unit, there may be slide out plastic things to widen and keep air from comming in, or else get 1 piece of wood, slide the AC to one side, and stick the wood in there. You need to fasten the AC unit into the window in case of a storm. I would also get some plastic foam from homedepot to insulate around the unit a little.

The only problem with having the gap is the unit won't work as well as hot air from out side comes in so it has more to cool and cool air it has just cooled goes back outside. So you want to block that space does not matter how you do it but it will help if you can.

I used the curtains and now most of the window is covered, altho it certainly isnt 'airtight' - how big a problem is this?

Do your windows slide side to side or up and down? It is much easier to put it in a window that opens up and down so if you have a choice pick a room with that type of window.
