Default NL Noob JJ hand

Just trying to learn about NL. I had started at .01/.02 but I received advice to move up at least a little so I could learn faster from the villains. (Pay more tuition=learn more?) This session is at .05/.10

Anyway I've only played a few hundred hands. I have been buying in short to put a ceiling on my misplay losses.

The villain in this hand had only joined the table 20 hands previously. So far he was playing loose passive preflop but didn't seem loose post flop. I had seen him fold the flop to a pot sized bet once. I hadn't seen him check raise and I hadn't seen him go to showdown.

This is how I played JJ. If this is wrong please tell what I should have done and why. Thank you in advance.

i think you're 2.89 to win 8.04... so 35.9% pot odds... about 8% to hit your set (assume it wins).... don't see 27% that he's betting a paired 10 or a straight draw (your J's block the straight quite well, but opponent doesn't know that for sure)...

so i guess i'd fold.... hope this isn't horrible advice.... smaller, more probing bet on flop??? then your pot odds are much worse, and much easier fold (of course, villain could play it differently, but you'll probably shut down on turn anyway and not lose anymore money)...

hope you get more responses....

BTW, you might be interested that dan harrington in his fantastic books (HOH 1 or 2) says that he almost always gives a 10% chance to an opponent bluffing.... but not sure how he categorizes gutshot straights and pushing second pair. are those bluffs??

its pretty close , def very high variance ...you could be a very marginal fav , or small underdog in the long run if you call ...i tend to avoid high variance situations like these ..i just fold

Would you have check/folded the flop? Or bet folded? If b/f what size bet is optimal?

i prefer the bet, fold to raise.... check doesn't give much info..... anyway you do it, i think alot of people (myself included) have a problem with assuming everyone is stealing the pot from you. i find at lower levels there isn't that much bluffing or even weak semi-bluffing (AK as overcards with one -card flush draw =strong semi-bluff)

That is exactly how I would play it. The flop bet could be smaller, but $1 is a nice round number that won't provoke much thought.

I think this is an easy fold on the flop. If you call the $2.89, I don't think you will get more than $2.00 back on average. A lot of that is from spiking a jack (worth about $0.70) or a running straight (worth about $0.30).

Typical microstakes players do not make many check-raise bluffs. It's ok to give check-raises a lot of credit until you suspect that someone is check-raising as a bluff frequently.
