5 is marginally better than 4, since if SD returns the kick for a TD they now need a FG to win, or at least force SD to try for 2. 6 isnt really any better than 5 at all, in any circumstance within reason.

They'll be 4 if they score a TD. They go for 2 because It means OT if the chargers score and miss the XP.
