Default A difficult river

Bellagio 15-30 Sun afternoon.

I haven't played many hands at all, but when I have they've been straightforward. I certainly have a TAG image. The villain is a young player who's also playing TAG, the most noteworthy hand I can remember he check-raised the flop with an OESFD, hit the straight flush on the turn and then just bet it home.

I raise UTG with Q [img]/images/graemlins/diamond.gif[/img] Q [img]/images/graemlins/club.gif[/img], folded to the villain on the button who 3-bets, I four bet, he calls.

Flop: J[img]/images/graemlins/spade.gif[/img] T[img]/images/graemlins/diamond.gif[/img] 5[img]/images/graemlins/spade.gif[/img]

I bet, he calls quickly.

Turn: 9[img]/images/graemlins/heart.gif[/img]

I bet, he calls again.

River: T[img]/images/graemlins/spade.gif[/img]

What's the best thing to do here?

Bet. There's only 3 possible flush combinations (AK, KQ, AQ), and there's 15 other combinations of AK that I think are calling a lot. Lots of people are going to advocate bet/folding, but i'm not good enough to do that, so i'd end up bet/calling if raised. I think you're just getting called here a lot more that you're going to have to deal with a raise.

Well calling a raise here is an absolute disaster.

I'm not sure how this is a difficult river, a difficult hand maybe. As the hand played out, it seems like you were ahead or behind before the river.

Yeah, I think so, too. It's pretty difficult to put him on QQ, so you were either ahead or behind before the river.

Ok, joking aside. Value Bet here, fold to raise.

I don't play live much, but isn't a river raise a little suspicious? He shouldn't be improved by the 10, he wouldn't reraise an UTG raise with AT. Also the only 2 combos of a flush have a billion outs and would often raise the flop. Still, it seems a bluff is unlikely.

Anyway probably doesn't matter, it's almost never getting raised.

I actually want to check/call here, (I almost want to check/fold). In my experience, this sort of player isn't going to call a river bet with AK often enough (he has to know he's just calling for a chop), and there's really no other hand that we can value bet against. I know that we aren't going to induce a bluff very often, but I think it happens a bit more than we get a call from a weaker hand.

Well I bet the river, and the villain smoothly puts out 12 chips.

Should I call here never? seldom? often? always?
