No Young, Francis, Maine, Gorzelanny, Snell, Hudson, Oswalt...

Cole Hamels shouldn't have been picked over any of these guys, I mean I know he strikes out a lot of guys but come on.

There is no way Francis or Maine are > than Hamels. Hudson is questionable as well, and I'd also probably take Hamels over Snell and Gorzelanny, too. And maybe Oswalt, whose peripherals are sucking.

all of those guys have a better ERA+ and VORP than Hamels

Thanks for not reading what I just posted.

Read your post, don't agree with your criteria. In my mind it should be who is having the best year, not who will be better in future years or who was good in the past.

So it's a hot streak game, not an All-Star game.

Hamels SHOULD be picked over all of those guys. And WAY above some of them (Maine?? lol). Quit looking at ERA and VORP. Those are very luck and defense dependent numbers. Hamels smokes these guys in just about every defense/luck-independent metric. He's striking out over 9 per 9 IP, and has a 4:1 k/bb ratio. He's been unlucky in BABIP and HR rate, which has inflated his ERA and whip.

If you seriously think pitchers like Maine, Francis deserve a spot before Hamels, you are crazy.

Hamels is having a better year than those guys. He is having a better year than all but maybe 4 or 5 NL pitchers.

Do any of those defensive/luck independent metrics account for extreme FB/GB types of pitchers?

That is the main weakness of most of those metrics, I'm sure. They are still more reliable than stuff like ERA and WHIP though.

I suspect there is probably a metric or two that incorporate ground ball rates (as well as line drives and fly balls), but I'm not sure.

Anyone else feel like the all-star game should be the best position players and the absolute worst pitchers? I'd love to see Jorge Julio vs Manny Ramirez/A-Rod/Mag Ordonez.
