arghh my xbox 360 is dead with 3 lights. What's the best fix?

My warranty is out and I've read a few different ways of fixing this. Is there a method that is proven to fix this long term?

Buy a 360 Elite?

I guess that or call Microsoft Support and pay to have them fix it.

Besides the obvious way of letting MS fix it, there is no proven way. First you need to find out what's wrong with the Xbox. There's a guide on finding the error code here: http://forums.xbox-scene.com/index.php?showtopic=484726

If you have error code 0110 (which is common) then there are some things you can try. One involves tightening the heat sink on the GPU. The other involves heating the motherboard with a heat gun.

I have a friend who tried heating the motherboard. It didn't help and he had to get a new Xbox.

A friend at work got his to work by putting a towel over it - seriously! I think the real fix is to reapply thermal paste to the GPU, but that means opening the box and buying some paste - Arctic Silver is probably the best.

I'm pretty sure the Microsoft is fixing all 360's for the 3 flashing lights even if they are out of warranty. That just happened with mine.

i was about to make a post about what happened mine.

i got the ring of death, i was gutted as i have lost the receipt for my 360.

did a google on the towel method and IT WORKED! hahaha, it actually [censored] fixed my xbox.

wrapped it around in a towel for 15 mins, left it on. took of the towel and let it cool for 10 minutes.

soon as i put it on it started working again, no more ring of death.

Sent mine back, they didn't charge me but i got a refurb, no problems with the refurb so far though (~1 month of use).

Wow, I never knew about this towel trick. Mine got the Ring of Death as well, but I'll probably just send it back, I bought it like a month and a half ago. They won't charge me will they? Do they require a receipt?

Didn't ask me for one - had to send mine 2 weeks ago. I got a refurb back.
