20/40 - Tactics with one pair
20/40 Commerce Casino
SB is a terrible player, loose with average aggression. He raises rather infrequently PF but coldcalls often. He likes check-raising. No reads available on the BB. EP1 limps, EP2 limps, I limp on button with 8 [img]/images/graemlins/heart.gif[/img] 7 [img]/images/graemlins/heart.gif[/img], SB raises. BB and all players call. 5 to flop. Flop (10 SB): 8 [img]/images/graemlins/club.gif[/img] 4 [img]/images/graemlins/diamond.gif[/img] 2 [img]/images/graemlins/spade.gif[/img] SB bets quickly, BB call, EP1 call, EP2 call, I call. Turn (7.5 BB): T [img]/images/graemlins/spade.gif[/img] SB checks. BB now elects to bet, EP1 + EP2 fold, I raise. The veins come out on SB's forehead, his mouth twists into a scowl, and he slams sixteen chips into the pot. I put him pretty solidly on AK. BB calls. River (13.5 BB): 3 [img]/images/graemlins/club.gif[/img] SB mucks out of turn, BB checks, I check. Would anyone choose different tactics postflop here? How and why? |

Re: 20/40 - Tactics with one pair
I'm perfectly happy dumping on the turn. We missed our 2pair draw, we didn't pick up a str8 draw, we're done with the hand. The way you chose to play is fine though. You acknowledge the likelyhood of being out-paired or out-kicked, so you raise the turn, hoping to get a free showdown with the added benefit of making it correct for a bunch of hands with outs to fold. Either way is fine.

It seems to me the pot is too big for a fold...

Re: 20/40 - Tactics with one pair
I think the turn is closer to a fold than a raise. BB's flop call probably means that he's got overcards, a PP, a random 8, or (more unlikely) a set that he's slowplaying. The T on the turn connects with a lot of his likely overcard holdings and I don't think he'd bet into 3 flop callers with a small PP here (when another overcard comes), so you are basically hoping that he's got a weaker 8.
I'd say it's fold > raise >>>> call on the turn. Given the turn raise, the river check is clearly correct. |
