Default Worth taking a single semester of Japanese?

Would it be worth it to take a single semester of Japanese? I have one semester left and am looking for some classes to fill out my schedule with. I would definitely be interested in visiting Japan sometime so it'd be nice to have at least a basic grasp of the language - will one semester give me this?

Japanese is incredibly difficult, unless you know that you've got a knack for learning languages from past experience it probably wont be worth your time.

I'm living in Japan right now and have been studying for a couple years the states.

No Japanese is not incredibly hard, but a semester definitely won't give you a basic grasp on the language.

A semester will probably give you enough time to learn katakana, hiragana and some very basic sentences/sentence structure. But when you actually come here you will have no idea what anyone is saying.

So yeah don't waste your time

If you think it might be interesting take it. You probably won't have the ability to communicate with it in any meaningful way after one semester, but you can always decide to contine studying.

I would say that taking a single semester of any language isn't worth it.

It's a Japanese class. I'd expect to see mostly greasy guys with pony tails and hentai obsessions.

Anyhow, thanks. Guess I'll pass on this one.

I don't know how things go at your school, but at my school all the Japanese/Chinese/Korean people would take intro classes of their respective languages to fulfill requirements and earn easy As. If this is common at your school, and if people are graded on a curve, you could be in some deep [censored].

A single semester is not worth it because you won't learn enough. But a semester might make you want to learn more, and you might learn on your free time.

a 2nd language is pretty useful.

I'm on my 3rd quarter of japanese and I still wouldn't be able to speak well to another person. I'd still sound like a 5 year old
