I know a ton of people that have done this in Buenos Aires. It isn't as much as it sounds and you are making money in the local currency. From what I remember they made about $6-8/hr USD here which is enough to get by but nothing glamorous.

A relative of mine made $35 an hour teaching English in Japan in the 1980s but I have no idea if this can be matched today. She has a master's degree not just some junky certification for teaching English as a second language though.
