I bought a gateway laptop with vista on it, haven't had a problem. I don't know what all the "vista is bad" fuzz is all about.

i just want my mac to be as stable and fast as possible... parallel means that i can use xp and mac's OS at the same time... will this be better or just mess everything up? as i said im using just for poker, music and movies

[/ QUOTE ]
If you just want it to be as stable and fast as possible, you should use Boot Camp. Parallels is only necessary if you have a need or desire to run the Mac operating system at the same time.

Have you looked at VMWare's Fusion? I think that is the route that I am going to take since they not only seem to have caught up and surpased parallels but they have also shown to be much less taxing to the cpu. I don't believe they currently support DirectX 10 yet so that might be an issue with using Vista, but since there doesn't seem to be much else supporting it I'm sure they will be up to speed by then.

Speaking of Vista, I would only be planning on using it for some older games, a few apps and poker. If one isn't looking for too much immediately and can hold off until the service packs are developed is Vista fine for now or is it looking like an Edsel?

Vista 64 is certainly the ideal way to go now. The drivers have matured and are now stable with damn near everything now and the support is now up to speed and in place.

The key, though, is going the 64-bit route...but to really make best use of this, 4Gig of RAM is ideal.
