Default Win2k Gurus- How toast am I here?

Looks like I might have had a serious system crash. I started off with a

STOP: c0000218 {Registry File Failure}
The Registry cannot load the hive(file):
SystemRoot\System32\Config\SOFTWARE...
error and in my attempt to repair this completely killed my system to the point where I can not even get into the BIOS nor use the CD drive to boot up.
On the bright side I was planning on buying a new system, on the more serious side how stuck am I in getting data off the drive if even my usual failsafe alternative (Knoppix) can't even boot up?

What could you possibly do in an attempt to repair software that killed the hardware? Jam a fork in it?

You should be able to get an external harness to put the old hard drive in and access it from the new computer unless you borked that up too.

I'll give that a try sometime when I am really hungry. My box is very termpermental and does things to spite me. A swift kick in the rear- actually I pulled the plug and let it sit for a half hour- and at least now I can get a boot sequence going again and run knoppix so it is just a software issue once again. I was actually concerned this time around that it was truly the end but I guess there are a couple of leg twitches left.
