More stupidity in public education, WA legislature style
10th Grade WASL May Ditch Math and Science
In a nutshell, WA state legislators are trying to remove math and science portions of the Washington Assessment of Student Learning and replacing it with end of course exams. Why? Because too many students are failing these portions of the test. Im all for some sort of public education in theory, but the way we implement it in the states needs some radical overhaul. |

The only hope of fixing our public education system is to abolish it.

Re: More stupidity in public education, WA legislature style
Are there any developed nations without public education?
What is the most developed nation without public education? American people aren't demanding public education, but rather the industrialists are. People need to be trained to sit there all day and pay attention for long periods. |

Re: More stupidity in public education, WA legislature style
compulsory schooling has long been an intimate part of the State in terms of what subjects are taught (and not taught) and in the way things are taught (view the emphasis on individual achievement, competition, rote memorization, etc in US schools) -- Ferrer and Goodman are both pretty eloquent in their critiques
I'm uncomfortable using the term "education" as a stand in for "schooling" though -- Education has always been a part of human societies and indeed the free exchange of ideas and learning is a fundamental part of society and any libertarian society worth being called such would maximize access to all sorts of different means of education and learning depending on the desires and skills of the community in question |
