Gold Strike, Tunica

I'm interested in traveling to Tunica, MS for about a month to play mainly pot limit Omaha and maybe some no limit holdem.

I've been told that Gold Strike is the best place to play 5-10 or 10-20 PLO and such on a regular basis. Assuming that is true, I would like to know how much it would cost me to stay at Gold Strike including food and everything. Also, will it be inconvenient to not have a car or can I expect to be pretty self-sufficient staying at the casino?

Any kinda advice on the topic would be greatly appreciated.

Also, how would you rate the PLO play down there? I found the PLO games at this year's WSOP to be very profitable. Is Tunica softer/tougher/or about the same?

Normally (especially on weekends) the Goldstrike spreads low limit PLO ranging from 1/2 to 3/6 depending on interest...but a 5/10 or 10/20 isn't out of the question. I don't play Omahahaha so I really don't know how the games are. Some of them are nitty from what I hear. They do have a 25/50 PLO game that runs alot but that group of players in that game have been playing together for a long time from what I've been told. The NLHE games are very good on the weekends. Usually they will have 1/2, 1/3, 2/5, & occaisionally 5/10. If the GS doesn't have what you want, go next door to the Horseshoe. Between the two, you can scratch your poker itch. Tunica's poker rooms aren't real busy during the week unless its during a big tourney because its kinda of a weekend destination.

I don't have any idea what the poker room hotel rate is. Call them & see.

Personally, I wouldn't want to come & stay for a month unless you plan on living in the poker room since there's not alot to do other than gaming. There are shows, bars, & such but not alot to do if you leave the casino property unless you go to Memphis.

One more question --

I'm trying to fly out there from Vegas. I just looked into booking a ticket on priceline and another site and they dont seem to have direct flights to Tunica. They all fly to Little Rock, AR or Dallas.

Any advice on how to get there from West Coast?

You need to fly into Memphis. Airport's about 40 minute drive. I stayed at the Shoe for three days last week. I'm a LHE player and they have a 15/30 game that goes every weekday at 10AM. 1/2, 2/5 NL go almost always, 5/10 frequently. Not sure about non-holdem games. My room at the Shoe was $45/night and it was quite nice. All meals/drinks were comped. Poker room is, IMO, the nicest in the area. Floor, staff all competent. Limits games can be ultra-nitty to having 6 or 7 paying 3 or 4 bets preflop. (That's the 4/8 at night.) Total tab for 3 days, including my wife getting room service (not comped) at least once a day and watching movies while I was playing: $194. Best poker deal in the East.

The last time I stayed at GS, the "poker room rate" was $25/35 (week day/weekend). The standard down there is to require 5 hours of play per day to get the PRR. If you're planning to stay for a month in one hotel, I'd suggest trying to talk them into an even better rate.

While there's not really a whole lot to do in the Tunica area, the GS has both the Horseshoe and Sheraton as immediate neighbors. You can spend time at each of the three to help break things up a bit. If you have a car, Memphis is just 30 minutes away.

Comps for food at GS were, as of about six months ago, basically one free meal every 8 hours. It's pretty easy to time it to get both lunch and dinner free, and you can either skip breakfast or get it cheap in the food court area. All in all, you CAN stay self-sufficient at the casino, but if you need some basics and don't want to pay the markup at the hotel stores, the nearest convenience mart is about a mile away.

I'll let others comment on the PLO, as I tend to stick to HE. I can tell you that the 1/2 and 2/5 HE games are nice.

Last I was there around the WSOP circuit event, there wasn't any PLO that I saw in Gold Strike, but the Grand had a couple 5-10 tables going. Maybe this was different than normal because of the circuit event.

It doesn't go every weekend, but most weekends the Gold Strike has a 25-25-50 (on the button) PLO game.

It's now 35/50. For me it's still worth it over other places. Horseshoe (as of a month ago) puts you at The Grand and you have to take a shuttle to the hotel.

Sam't Town mattresses are friggin terrible but that place is 35 on weekends.

I never paid attention to mattresses...

...until I laid my head down on some sweet pillow-top deal at the Beau Rivage. That mattress was awesome.

Last Friday the PLO game at the Gold Strike was 5-10 blinds with a 25 rock and often a 50 live staddle immediately to the left of the rock. It was mostly 6 handed.

I don't think you'll find PLO consistently spread (i.e. daily) in Tunica. Usually 1 or two games on the weekends, and often times only the big game.
