I don't want to get too technical for you, but the internets are a series of tubes and slots.
Little things called bits and bytes run through these tubes and out the slots at the end, into your computer. Obviously if there's a traffic jam at some junction or other, the bits and bytes back up - then something gets through a slot and they can all move again. At the moment, there are a lot of slow noobs not clicking the right keys on their computers and that is adding to the backs up as the slots aren't becoming available quickly enough. In the case of the sidebar, when someone clicks on a button, all the bits and bytes rush towards the opened slot, but, and this is the important thing, IN A PARTICULAR ORDER - the "Sidebar Collapse Instruction" (SCI) is one of the LAST in this queue and therefore, from a computer operator's pov, it looks like the sidebar is collapsing a few seconds after it should. If Twoplustwo sent the SCI FIRST, instead of all the Open Advert and Open Avatar Instructions, the sidebar would collapse almost instantaneously, and the operator wouldn't even notice that it was expanded first, then collapsed immediately. There is always an easy answer to everything computer, (they are made up of only 1's and 0's, after all), but techies always like to make you suffer and wait for them, because they are getting their own back on you for beating up the little four-eyed gits at school.

I must confess some responsibility in the matter. Nigel Tufnel sold me a special computer that goes up to 2. When I'm busy on the Interwebs, sometimes my 2's start clogging up the tubes, as they were only designed to handle the 0's and 1's of your inferior computers. I sincerely apologize that my advanced technology is interfering with your enjoyment of this site.
