packing bottles of wine in your (checked) luggage

i dunno man, it's probably pretty hard to break a bottle of wine, honestly. you packed it up good too right? didn't just throw them in there but wrapped them in your jeans or something? i don't see how they could break honestly.

One time flying from paris my dad's suitcaise was full of red wine thanks to broken bottles.
Nevertheless I still pack the bottles.
Wine > clothes.

At the risk of stating the obvious, why not just pack the wine in a separate box and check that? Even if you are at the limit of checked bags, if you are nice to the lady at checkin, I doubt they'd give you [censored] about checking it. Or they'd probably just charge you 30 bucks or something. Better that than ruining hundreds of dollars worth of clothes.

Wine drinkers are the same people who resisted for years any attempt to use screw caps rather than corks because they (1) looked down on it from an image standpoint (2) were convinced it would impact taste, despite studies to the contrary.

How do you think plastic bottling would go over, even assuming you can show no long term impact on taste (and the shelf life for wine has to be a lot higher than the 3 or 4 months for carbonated soft drinks)?

For the same reason screw-cap tops aren't widely used despite being better.

I have brought back many bottles of wine/alcohol using the shirt wrap method with no breakage.

I don't think you will have any problem, and this is a really standard play.

A buddy of mine had one bottle out of three break about a year ago. I've done it before with no problems.

I think this is pretty standard. I brought back a couple of bottles of sake from Japan, and had no problems. I did the following:

- The bottles came in boxes, so I unboxed them and flattened the boxes.
- Put each bottle in plastic shopping bag with a lot of wadded up paper
- Tie up shopping bag handles
- Wrap each bag in clothes, making sure there was a layer of clothing between each bottle and the side of the suitcase, and each other
- Return, unwrap, and rebox
