Too thin of a value bet?
$15/$30 game at the Bellagio. Folds to me in middle position and I raise 8-8, very passive player calls on the button (he plays most of his hands, does not respect preflop raises, and calls down very weak after the flop), both blinds call. I don't have much of a read on how the blinds play, although one seems a bit too loose and passive, and the other seems tight.
Flop is 2, 4, 4 with two spades, and I don't have the 8 of spades. The blinds check to me, I bet, button calls, both blinds call. Turn is a K of spades and it checks around. River is a red 7, the blinds check to me and I bet. Too thin? |

Re: Too thin of a value bet?
As played the river is an easy bet.
It's better to bet the turn, imo. If you get 3 callers,& the 2 blinds check the river to you, checking the river would not be too bad. |

Re: Too thin of a value bet?
while it's bad to miss the $90, the big mistake in not betting the turn, is giving all of the non-spade overcards a free one.

Re: Too thin of a value bet?
I checked the turn because it seemed fairly unlikely that none of my 3 opponents had a K, flush or a 4 after they all called the flop. Don't I have to put them all on a fairly narrow range in order for my hand to be good?

Re: Too thin of a value bet?
uh, no. You have no reason to believe that any of your opponents have a K, 4 or a flush. You can't give up every time an overcard falls and you can't let every draw in the deck get there. There are SO MANY hands that actually have the odds to peal against you if you bet the turn. hands like QJ or QT that called the flop bet just to see if they hit top pair on the turn have 6 outs and the odds to call if they actually knew what you had. A[img]/images/graemlins/club.gif[/img]2[img]/images/graemlins/spade.gif[/img] has eleven outs against you, but will fold if you bet this turn. Make them all make the "mistake" of folding by betting this turn. It is easy to dump your hand to a raise. Also, if they DO call with their outs, you still win, because instead of seeing their 12% or 25% shot for free, they are paying you $30 for the priviledge. If your still scared on the river (after betting the turn) you can check. But you HAVE to bet this turn to get some of these outs to fold.

Re: Too thin of a value bet?
on this flop people will peel with all their unpaired overcards hands, giving a free card on the turn is terrible cuz it allows some guy that peeled with T9 to hit for free, it also allows lone spades a free chance when they would have folded if you bet...
sometimes you will be losing to a K or 4, but you need to protect your hand if it is still in the lead... |
