I wasn't a huge fan, but I thought this pic from his funeral mass in Italy was pretty amazing with the planes perfectly synched.

"I've been watching Pavarotti videos on Youtube and it's very hard to find any of the good stuff on which his reputation was based. Instead I just see execrable duets with the likes of Bryan Adams, Barry White, The Spice Girls, etc."

Same thing with me. If someone asked me what i thought of Pavarotti i'd probably say he's great, but i don't really believe it. All i see are these horrible horrible opera/pop song fusions and they sound terrible imo. It's like on idol when you see people from style A singing style B and it sounds [censored] 90% of the time (although occasionally totally awesome). I'm assuming there's good stuff out there, and i like his popular stuff like nessun dorma etc. Can any serious fans recommend some of his better stuff, or tell me why he is so great beyond "his rendition of nessun dorma at the world cup was incredible" or "he bridged the gap between opera and popular music".

I wouldn't know a high C if it bit me on the ass, but the comments here say this is the song that made him famous:

Pour Mon Ame Fille (Donizetti)

The note at the end is pretty incredible.
