I can laugh at myself plenty, but that doesn't make anything attempting to satarize my positions is funny. And there are lots of "comedy" attempts that support my positions and aren't funny, either. |

Re: The Truth About the Rich
my post on this was better!!
Mobility was measured by dividing the nation's households equally into 10 groups (deciles) by income and tracking the second generation. The studies show long odds against moving more than a little bit up or down. 0.5%: moved from the bottom tenth to the top tenth 13.4%: moved from the bottom tenth to the top 50 percent of households 7.6%: moved from the fifth decile to the top 26.7%: in the top tenth stayed there 1.4%: from the top tenth descended to the bottom tenth 38.2%: born to the fifth decile will land within one decile up or down 70.5%: from the bottom tenth will end up in one of the lowest three deciles 53.8%: from the top tenth will end up in one of the top three deciles |

Almost half who start in the top 10% don't even stay in the top 30% despite enormous advantages in resources. On the other hand, 1 in 6 of the very poorest breaks in the top half in just one generation. So 1/6th of folks like inner city poor are moving to the top half of society every generation, while almost 1 in 3 gets to at least middle class. That is remarkable. Your summary as long odds is not justified based on the data you are showing... (unless you frequently make characterizations like "ZOMG that 1 in 3 shot was a miracle!) |

Re: The Truth About the Rich
[ QUOTE ]
I'm a capitalist, but I don't read the chart in quite the same way others here are. I see that more people stay in their quintile group than move to any other group. And that this is most pronounced for the poorest and richest quintiles. [/ QUOTE ] No math needed to figure this one out Andy. The rich stay smart and motivated and the poor stay ignorant and lazy. Stupid/lazy people with money loose it smart/motivivated people without money get some. |

Re: The Truth About the Rich
How is it corrected?
Labor movements, wars, disease, famine, natual disasters - talking the big picture here. I do believe we are slowly moving to a new world order with three spheres of influence: the amercias, europe, and asia. While the new order won't be centralized per se, it will be corporatized to an alarming degree. I don't think it will last too long. Having the world tied together through international trade will only prevent wars so long. And if its not war, it doesn't take all that much for a fragile distribution system to fall apart. Just think of where a lot of our food comes from: all over the world. |
