I wasn't sure if my cap on 4th was a profitable play when I'm likely almost dead for high.

im not a big hi/low player, but isn't 4th exactly what you want? Got a guy roped in the middle and you have the only low draw....

This is without straight possibilities:

pokenum -mc 500000 -7s8 2c 3d 4h 7s - ac ad 9h 9s - 8c 8d 8h ts / 8s
7-card Stud Hi/Low 8-or-better: 500000 sampled outcomes
cards scoop HIwin HIlos HItie LOwin LOlos LOtie EV
7s 2c 3d 4h 22059 22059 477941 0 300048 0 0 0.325
9s Ac Ad 9h 58140 141877 358123 0 0 0 0 0.200
Ts 8c 8d 8h 138805 336064 163936 0 0 0 0 0.475

With straight possibilities:
pokenum -mc 500000 -7s8 2c 3d 4h 6s - ac ad 9h 9s - 8c 8d 8h ts / 8s
7-card Stud Hi/Low 8-or-better: 500000 sampled outcomes
cards scoop HIwin HIlos HItie LOwin LOlos LOtie EV
6s 2c 3d 4h 64668 64668 435332 0 300608 0 0 0.368
9s Ac Ad 9h 57844 141717 358283 0 0 0 0 0.200
Ts 8c 8d 8h 138604 293615 206385 0 0 0 0 0.432

I accidentally gave the guy with an Ace two pair on 4th, if he's got just Aces your equity goes up 2% in both situations. The point is that I'm jamming any 4 low here, having 4 to a straight just makes it even better.

This is something I've been running into a lot with my endeavor into 8/b. Obviously our goal is to scoop the pot, but if theres a multiway pot that we're certain we have the only low draw/only low then dont we want to hook a 3rd player on ... Obviously in the end we only win half as much as when we scoop, but as this hand shows, theres usually a chance to scoop.

How does the play here change when the 4c is the Ad?

Thanks for holdin' my hand :-D

Technically that's not quite the case. Say we have three players in the hand to the end, each of whom invest X dollars in the hand. When we win one side, we get 1.5*X dollars, for a profit of 0.5*X. When we scoop, we get all 3*X dollars, for a profit of 2*X, four times what we'd win when we win one side. Nevertheless, if you're positive you have one side locked up, but have no chance for the other side, you definitely don't want to get the pot heads-up because you won't win any more money.

This very concept is explored more fully in High-Low Split For Advanced Players.

You think the other aggressor plays split Eights with an Eight out? I think your scoop chances are better than you think they are. It would be particularly poetic if you scooped by backing into an Eight-high straight.

Definitely jam fourth. I think that you have enough equity to raise fifth, but I don't think calling is awful. I'd raise the river. Maybe the other guy will time out and you can scoop the side pot. People will also call you a donkey and take copious notes about how stupid you are.

i favor a call on 5th only because of the deadness of the low cards you might need, but with the treys live I couldn't fault it much. if you had 6 instead of 4 scoop outs I'd go ahead and jam it.
